The Ultimate Wilderness Expedition

Northern Tier is the crown jewel of Scouting’s high‑adventure bases — a place where crews paddle into the Canadian wilderness, navigate pristine lakes, portage through ancient forests, and build the kind of confidence that only comes from real challenge.

This isn’t a vacation. It’s a once‑in‑a‑lifetime expedition where youth learn leadership, teamwork, resilience, and outdoor mastery in one of the most breathtaking backcountry environments in North America.

Crew 2319 has secured an 8‑Night Atikokan Adventure, launching from the Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base in Ontario. Our assigned trek:

What Makes Northern Tier Extraordinary

The Adventure of a Lifetime

Northern Tier is the Scouting America’s oldest National High Adventure program, outfitting Scout groups for canoe trips since the summer of 1923. Although, it never had a set location until the Charles L. Sommers Base was dedicated on May 17, 1942. As the participation at Northern Tier increased, so did the facilities. Eventually, two satellite locations in Canada opened up. Bissett, Manitoba and Atikokan, Ontario began seeing crews in 1972. Atikokan (Ojibwe for “caribou bones”) leased land from the province near Eye Lake in 1977, but permanent buildings were not allowed to be constructed at this location. Donald Rogert eventually donated land at the current location.

Located 50 miles north of the Ely base, the Atikokan Canoe Base outfits 1500 scouts each year for expeditions into the Northern regions of the Quetico Provincial Park as well as into the Canadian Crown Lands, including the Turtle River – White Otter Lake Provincial Park.

The Quetico is a gorgeous and pure wilderness, with minimal traces of human travel; the Crown Lands region features the remains of a used wilderness – trappers cabins, age-old gold mines and even the remains of a World War II Prisoner of War camp can be found amidst the beautiful wilds of the Canadian Shield (a vast geological shield covered by a thin layer of soil). Crew sizes may be up to 11 participants plus an Interpreter if traveling in the Crown Land and 8 participants plus an interpreter if traveling in the Quetico.

North America’s Canoe Country, a vast series of navigable lakes and rivers spanning thousands of square miles, is one of the last great wildernesses on the continent. This boreal forest of waterfalls and bogs, bears and wolves, granite crags and waist-deep mud remains nearly as much of a wilderness as it was for the first fur traders who explored the area in the 1600s. Two centuries after the fur trade’s peak in the early 1800s, our participants still follow in the footsteps of the French-Canadian voyageurs, paddling the same waters and straining over the same portage trails.

Northern Tier has a rich history that is further detailed in “The Far Northland.”
